15-minute Spanish speaking routines for ages 7 to 13

1. Two minutes. Greet and repeat yesterday's two words.
2. Four minutes. Model one sentence with three objects.
3. Six minutes. Make it a pointing, finding, or guessing game.
4. Three minutes. Learner picks a favourite and says one full sentence.

Keep the sentence frame visible. With Quiero la manzana roja, change only the object or colour at first.

1. Two minutes. Recall three useful phrases, no notes.
2. Four minutes. Expand one sentence with a place, time, or reason.
3. Six minutes. Use it in a roleplay, comparison, or mini interview.
4. Three minutes. Record a short answer, pick one thing to improve.

For older learners, remove one item from the café menu and ask them to choose something else.

Choose five familiar objects and hide them around the room.

Ages 7 to 9: ¿Dónde está el libro? El libro está en la mesa. Stuck? Offer two Spanish choices and point.

Ages 10 to 13: add a clue: Busca algo que usamos para escribir. They find it, name it, and say where it was.

Draw or show four foods, hobbies, places, or animals. Ask ¿Cuál prefieres?

Younger: Prefiero el perro. Older: add porque es divertido or compare. Accept short answers first, then model longer ones.

Use cups, plates, or a drawn menu. One customer, one server.

• Buenos días. Quiero un zumo, por favor.
• ¿De naranja o de manzana?
• De naranja. ¿Cuánto cuesta?
• Cuesta tres euros.

Swap roles. Older group: remove one menu item, make them choose again.

Choose a person, animal, place, or thing; give clues one at a time. Younger: colour, size, location. Older: add function or comparison.

Example: Es pequeño. Es amarillo. Está en la cocina. The other person guesses, then sets the next clues.

Draw a box for morning, midday, afternoon and evening. Add one action to each.

Ages 7 to 9: one verb per box. Ages 10 to 13: link the story with primero, después, luego, and por la noche.

Goal: ask for and give a preference.

Language: ¿Te gusta más X o Y? Me gusta más X porque...

Name two known choices: summer or winter, football or cricket, cats or dogs: then ask, answer, swap one option, and repeat. End with a 30-second recording of two preferences.

Younger: one adjective is reason enough; older: ask one follow-up. Don't correct mid-recording: pick one fix after and repeat it once.

Understandable? Let the learner finish. Then repeat the corrected form naturally and ask for one more try.

Learner: La perro es blanco.

Adult: Sí, el perro es blanco. ¿Y el gato?

Stop only if the error blocks meaning or the learner cannot continue.

• The adult speaks most of the Spanish.
• The learner waits for English before every turn.
• The game needs more explanation than speaking.
• Words get named, but the target sentence never comes.

Shorten the activity, return to one sentence pattern or let the learner point before speaking.
